Sister Cristela Mackinnon

February 13, 1927 — January 14, 2018

Sister Cristela MacKinnon, Servant of Mary, Minister to the Sick, 90, peacefully died on January 14, 2018 at the convent where she lived. Friends may call at the Sisters Chapel 800 N. 18th St., KCK, from 5:30 7:00 pm on Tues. Jan. 16 where the Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 pm. The Funeral Mass will be 10 am, Wednesday at the convent. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Sister Cristela was born in Chicago on Feb. 13, 1927 to John and Dorothy MacKinnon. Upon moving to Los Angeles, Sr. Cristela met the Servants of Mary and entered as a postulant in 1942. She continued her religious formation and schooling in Kansas City, KS, graduating from Bishop Ward High School in 1947. She received her nursing education at Providence Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as an RN in 1949. She professed Perpetual Vows on Dec. 8, 1950 and served her religious community in various capacities and was active in the nursing ministry throughout the greater KC area until 1972 when she was appointed General Secretary of the Congregation in Rome. In 1990, she returned to Kansas City and resumed her service to the sick by starting a visiting nursing program. She later served as portress and touched many people through her caring and joyful spirit. Sister Cristela loved her vocation as a Servant of Mary and lived it to the full. She was very much loved by her religious community as well as by many dear friends who came to know her through the years. Special thanks to Catholic Community Hospice for their compassionate care.
