Norma Jean Mahoney

August 25, 1927 — April 6, 2020

Norma Jean (Preece) Mahoney passed away on April 6, 2020 at Providence Medical Center. Norma was 92 years young, and made the most of every day she lived. She loved baking, gardening and crocheting before her hands betrayed her with arthritis. Her tomato plants grew even in the worst of weather and her roses never failed to bloom. Norma was known for the delicious pies and candies she made with love for friends and family. She was a wonderful seamstress just like her mother, and made many holiday outfits, dresses and costumes for her daughters as they grew up. Norma never knew a stranger, always offering a smile or conversation to anyone she met. She was a kind, generous soul who would do anything to help another. Norma spent countless hours watching her childrens sporting events, school activities and dance recitals. When the time came, she did the same for her grandchildren always bringing her bag of treats to share with the crowd! Noni, as she was called by her grandkids, was everyones grandma. Norma loved her family above everything and was truly proud of all that her children and grandchildren accomplished. She didnt hesitate to tell you either! Norma was born and raised in KCK attending St. Rose of Lima school and Bishop Ward High School. She attended Nursing School at Old General Hospital and went on to work as an Operating Room nurse for Dr. Evans. Norma also worked for many years in the Unified Governments Election Commissioners office before retiring. Norma married Joe Mahoney on Oct 26, 1957 at St. Peters Cathedral. She became an honorary Irishman and filled the role quite nicely, although never giving up her German roots. They settled and raised their children in that parish, where Norma took an active role in the school as a room parent, PTO member, field trip chaperone and all around volunteer. She was a member of the Altar Society. Norma was preceded in death by her husband Joseph L. Mahoney Jr., a son John Joseph Mahoney, parents Frank and Agnes Preece, brother William Preece, and a grandson Dalton DeGroot. She leaves to cherish the most wonderful memories, daughter Noreen Felich (Frank), son Timothy Mahoney (Caroline), and daughter Theresa Mahoney DeGroot. Norma also leaves her grandchildren Ashley Mahoney, Rachel Mirch (Patrick), Amber Mahoney, Timmy Mahoney, Emily Vaughn (Mitchell), Dylan DeGroot, Zachary Mahoney, Dawson DeGroot and Delaney DeGroot, and her great- grandsons Max, Joey and Lucas. She also leaves many nieces and nephews whom she cherished. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, private interment will be Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas. A funeral mass will be held at a later date. Norma was a woman of great faith, hope and love. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
