Mary Elizabeth Hibbs, 79, of Kansas City, KS passed away Sunday morning, June 20, 2021 at home after a bout with cancer. Those who knew Mary Beth, knew she was an avid sports fan. She loved KU basketball and KC Chiefs football. In 1993, she sent in a postcard to KMBC Channel 9 news to compete for a chance to be a guest sportscaster. She was ultimately chosen and broadcast sports on the 5 & 6 pm news from Royals Stadium and the 10 pm news from the studio. She chose to interview a lesser-known player to see what kept him sharp and mentally ready to play. She was an underdogs champion throughout her life, always taking up the cause of the fragile. An article in the KC STAR was written about her and her involvement in this contest where she summed up her audition experience at the end of the interview as "your mother reading the sports news".
Mary Beth was born in Kansas City, KS where she lived all her life. She was a Catholic and a graduate of Bishop Ward High School in 1959. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Hibbs, father, Joseph M. Collins, mother, LaVene (Robertson) Collins, her brother Joseph Collins, and sister Patricia (Collins) Stewart. She is survived by her daughter Pamela K. (Hibbs) Kahao, son Charles H. Hibbs, sister Rita (Collins) Janesko, brother Stephen Collins, a sister-in-law Cecilia Collins, an aunt, Ruth Robertson, one grandchild, several cousins and many nieces and nephews. The family requests no flowers.
