Margie Flores

July 23, 1943 — October 18, 2016

Marguerita Christina Jurez Flores, 73, of Grandview, Missouri, passed away fortified by the rites of the Holy Mother Church on October 18, 2016 at Kindred Hospital of Kansas City in Kansas City, Missouri following a battle with dementia and renal failure. Margie was born July 23, 1943 in Brawley, California and was the youngest of six children and daughter of Alfonso Garnica and Estefana Nieves Jurez. Margie entered Holy Matrimony to Abel Raya Flores on July 27, 1968.

A Rosary will begin the Visitation at 9:30 a.m. and the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church, 13000 Bennington Ave in Grandview, Missouri. A small reception will follow the mass in the parish hall. The day of interment will be decided by the family later and her final resting place will be at Riverview Cemetery District in Brawley, CA.

Margies parents taught her at a very young age to strive to be the best she can be in life and she showed it by way of service. She, along with her five older siblings, worked diligently for their family business, Baratita Market, that was ultimately destroyed by an earthquake in Brawley, California. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School until 8th grade and graduated from Brawley Union High School in 1962 with high honors. Once Margie graduated, she volunteered as an apprentice-nursing assistant for the late Augustus H. Foster, M.D. delivering babies, giving injections and helping the sick. Once married, Margie and Abel moved to Hayward, California, where they jointly raised their two children, Maggie and Paul settling in San Jose, California. Her husbands place of employment, General Motors, closed their Fremont plant in California, which resulted in the relocation of the family to Grandview, Missouri in 1984.

Margie was an active and devoted Catholic who first attended Saint Mathew the Apostle Parish in Kansas City, Missouri to then later become an active parishioner of Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church for her last 16 years of her life. Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church of Brawley, California will bless her final resting place.

She is preceded in death by her father, Alfonso (1960), mother, Estefana (1997), nephew, Richard I. Juarez "Junior" (1998), and her oldest brother Alfonso N. Juarez, II "Sonny" (2010). Margie is survived by her husband of 48 years, Abel Raya Flores of Grandview, MO, children Marguerita (Robert) Porras of Kansas City, KS, Paul (Adriana) Flores of Kansas City, MO, 1 grandson, Robert-Abel Faustino Porras and 1 step-granddaughter, Anissa Martinez; 2 sisters, Mary (Jerry) Jaramillo of El Monte, CA and Micaela (Ralph) Duran, of Livingston, CA; 2 brothers, Dario (Jenny) Juarez of Victorville, CA and Richard (Laura) Juarez of Brawley, CA. along with many nieces and nephews, cousins, godchildren, and various friends who she considered as family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the following organizations: Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church, 13000 Bennington Ave, Grandview, MO 64030 (noting on behalf of Margie J. Flores Memorial Fund); The American Diabetes Association (www.diabetes.org); Lewy Body Dementia Association (www.lbda.org).
