Leo Frank Marcel, July 19,1930 – October 31,2023
Leo F. Marcel passed away on October 31, 2023, at Hospice House, North Kansas City, MO, surrounded by his family. Services will be November 18, 2023, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 708 N 4th St. Kansas City, KS. The Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. and the visitation at 11:00 a.m. Mass will be at noon. Lunch will be after mass for family and friends in the church basement.
Leo was born July 19, 1930, to Leo Paul and Mary (Kushan) Marcel in the Strawberry Hill area of Kansas City, KS. He was a 1948 graduate of Bishop Ward High School. He joined the Navy at age 18 and served during the Korean War from 1948 until 1952. He was married to Jeri (McKinney) for 48 years and they had 5 daughters.
Leo was an avid tennis, racquetball, and pickleball player. He continued to play pickleball until he was 90 years old. He loved ballroom dancing with his companion Karen Myers. Leo also enjoyed hunting, fishing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. His favorite fishing hole was Roaring River State Park. He always had a “special” fishing lure that was going to “outfish” everyone.
Leo worked at several financial institutions including, Household Finance, National Bank in North Kansas City, MO, and Kansas National Bank. He was vice president of Mid America Computing, a business he started with partners.
Leo was proud of his Croatian ancestry and had many stories about growing up in Strawberry Hill that he shared with family and friends.
Surviving Leo are his daughters, Lisa (Jim Fariss - deceased), Elaine (Dr. William Culbert), Karen Marcel, Jeanette Marcel and Suzanne Marcel, grandsons Dr. Matthew Culbert (Diana) and Carson Smith, granddaughter Madison Shepherd, longtime companion Karen Myers, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by Jeri Marcel, his parents, Leo P. and Mary, his uncles John and Mike Kushan, his brothers Larry and Jim Marcel, nephew Larry Marcel, and cousins Jimmy Kushan and Sister Barbara Kushan.
