There he was a 2 sport All-Metro performer in football and basketball. he was a beloved younger brother to Alex and Walt Zych. He served in the Army and played on a select Army baseball team. He married his sweetheart Mary Jane Holmes and was devoted to her for over 65 years in marriage before her passing in June, 2022. John worked as a cable splicer for Southwestern Bell for 30 years retiring in 1987. He instilled a great work ethic to his children by example. He enjoyed retirement and took painstaking effort to have the greenest lawn around-always planting and rearranging his flowers that were so very special to him. He enjoyed painting houses and visiting with friends over coffee. John was proud of his heritage , always up for traditional Polish dishes and family gatherings as his family grew. “Papa” could always be found tinkering around his garage, shed or in his chair reading his beloved paper and loyally watching the Royals, Chiefs or KU games. He was Bishop Miege’s biggest basketball fan!
