John Morrissey passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends Saturday, October 28, 2023, just shy of his 52nd birthday.
John was born in Kansas City, KS on October 30, 1971. The baby of the family, he was immediately adored. John attended Christ the King grade school, Bishop Ward high school where he made lifelong friends. John earned a BS in Criminal Justice from Washburn University.
John could make anyone laugh. He provided entertainment even during his last days; keeping anyone who came to visit laughing. Lying in bed at Hospice House, he was cracking jokes, making sure everyone was ok, and throwing in an occasional jab. John warned his youngest nephew he would go back to haunt him and slap fishes away from his line at WYCO Lake.
John enjoyed golfing in a good scramble tournament; collecting sports memorabilia; fishing with his dad, brothers, and his nephew Daniel (Especially every opening day at WYCO Lake) and experimenting in the kitchen or on the grill with his latest kitchen gadget. He spent time in Rick’s Garage with his siblings and niece and nephews, enjoying nice weather and the latest fruity beverage the liquor store up the street had to offer. John loved taking rides around WYCO Lake with his dog, Sully, and in true Morrissey fashion enjoyed working in his yard. Coffee on the deck with Cousin Billy was another favorite of John’s. He cared and loved so deeply for the people in his life, gave the best bear hugs and always made everyone feel special.
John had a 20-year career at UMKC as Associate Budget Director. He formed close and lasting friendships with coworkers. We are grateful for the stories and John isms shared by Karen, Heather, and Cody. They were a true family.
John was preceded in death by his grandparents Mack and Ginny Pryor and Bill and Anna Rodina Morrissey and Ruth Morrisey. Parents, Dick Morrissey, and Janet (Pryor) Orlowski, as well as his Uncle Tom Heffern, and his best buddy Dude. He is survived by his Stepfather, Jack Orlowski, sister Susan Morrissey (Miles), brothers Rick Morrissey (Emily) and Tim Morrissey (Diane), his nephews Kyle, Richard and Daniel and his niece Samantha as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am followed by mass at 10:30am. Burial to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Kansas City, Kansas. A luncheon will be held in the St. Patrick’s Parish Center once the services conclude.
Johns’ cancer was harsh and relentless. He did not have many good days. We are grateful beyond words for the staff at St. Luke's Hospice House. They gave him the care, comfort, and dignity he deserved. For this reason, the family suggests contributions to St. Luke's Hospice House in lieu of plants and flowers.
John left us with so many amazing and funny memories and he is greatly missed. We will hold our moments with him always, and know he is with us.
Rest now, Johnny Cakes. Until we meet again – Later! *metal fingers*
