Frances Granahan died peacefully on November 4, 2021 in Kansas City, Kansas. Visitation is scheduled for 9-10 AM on Monday, November 8 at St. John the Baptist Church where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date in the Granahan family plot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Wyoming, Pennsylvania.
Born on October 23, 1936, Fran grew up in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City KS, graduated from St. John the Baptist elementary school in 1950 and was a 1954 graduate of Bishop Ward High School. At St. Marys College in Leavenworth, KS she majored in elementary education, and as a member of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth KS she taught elementary school in Montana, Colorado, and Oklahoma. Fluent in Spanish after studying at the Intercultural Formation Center in Cuernavaca, Mexico, she served as a missionary in Talara, Peru and Santa Maria Visitacion in Solola, Guatemala.
After leaving the community, she graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Political Science and was a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. In her work with the U.S. House of Representatives, she served on the Pension Task Force which produced the ERISA legislation (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) which protects workers pensions. After leaving the Congressional staff position, Fran was the Washington Representative for Texas Eastern Corporation and then the Manager of Government Operations for Panhandle Eastern Corporation. She retired in 1995 to be Jims caregiver.
Fran and Jim lived in New Jersey after retirement and were active members of St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Medford, NJ. She volunteered to help the poor with the St. Mary of the Lakes Conference of St. Vincent de Paul for a number of years, and also served on the Board of Directors.
Following Jims death in 2017, Fran returned to Kansas City KS to be closer to family and friends. She was a true matriarch of the Turk family, and is and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Preceding her in death were her parents Matthew and Louise Turk, her siblings Helen Verbeck, Emily Novak, Bette Calevich and Raymond Turk, and her Beloved husband James Edward Granahan. She is survived by her brother Edward Turk, loving nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Sisters Servants of Mary, 800 N. 18th, Kansas City, Kansas or St. John the Baptist Church, 708 N. 4th, Kansas City, Kansas.
