Dennis James Murphy, 79, passed away at KU Medical Center surrounded by his family on June 30, 2025. He was born November 16, 1945 in Kansas City, Kansas to James Bernard Murphy and Barbara Murphy (nee Stojkovich) and was joined by his sisters, Mary and Loretta. They grew up in and around Strawberry Hill. Dennis attended Bishop Ward High School (’63) and matriculated at Rockhurst College (now University) earning a bachelor’s degree. He began work for Trans World Airlines as an accountant before enlisting in the Army during Vietnam, returning once he had fulfilled his commitment to his country.
Upon his return, he cared for his father for many years before marrying the love of his life, Joyce Murphy (nee Schachtner) on May 29, 1976. Their union produced three children - Patrick (Iwona), Aileen (Gary), and Bryan. It also produced three grandsons who became his world: Tyler, Sean, and Julian.
Dennis worked tirelessly for his church, St. Mary/St. Anthony, acting as accountant, eucharistic minister, lector, Christmas manger assembler, and all-around helping hand at countless church functions. He worked several jobs simultaneously to make sure his kids had the best education and opportunities while attending their sporting events, theatrical productions, and life events. His dedication to his family continued throughout the last years of his life while he was regaled with tales of his grandsons’ exploits, achievements, and future plans.
He is preceded in death by his beloved son, Bryan, his parents, and his sisters. Besides his wife, children, and grandchildren, Dennis leaves behind countless nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and two family dogs (Nigel and Murphy) that he was happy to sneak treats to when he thought no one was looking.
