Agnes Ann Phelps

July 4, 1938 — June 19, 2021

On June 19th, Agnes passed away peacefully, with her two daughters at her side, after a three year courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Agnes was born in Kansas City, Kansas to Anthony Joseph Lipovac and Agnes Julia (Mayerle) Lipovac on July 4th, 1938. She spent her youth on Strawberry Hill in KCK and attended Holy Family School and Ward High School. She attended college at Saint Marys College (now University of Saint Mary) in Leavenworth Kansas where she majored in English. Agnes loved her college years and remained active in the Saint Marys alumni association throughout her life.
In 1960 Agnes married Don Rodney Phelps. They had three children and were married 59 years. Aside from being a wonderful mom and heart of the family Agnes loved to cook, spend time keeping up with family and friends, and always did her morning KC Star crossword puzzle.
Her careers included owning and managing three contemporary furniture stores in the 1970s called Habitat. She had a wonderful knack for interior design and helped to create interesting displays in the stores. She also had a creative hand in designing rooms by Habitat in several KC Symphony Designers Showhouses. In the 80s and 90s she worked at the Kansas City Star as one of their top advertising reps and for a few years prior to her retirement from the Star she worked at the front desk.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents (Anthony and Agnes Lipovac), her daughter, Janet Aileen Phelps Bernstein, brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Jo Ann Lipovac and husband Don Phelps. She is survived by her brother, James Lipovac, daughters Laura Krzyzanowski (Bill) and Donna Coldren (Jeffrey), five grandsons; Kolbe Krzyzanowski (Alia), Jamisen Krzyzanowski, Julien Bernstein, Ian Coldren, Ryan Coldren and one great grandson, Ezra Krzyzanowski.
Agnes was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
